With this in mind, this industry-oriented program has been designed to be comprehensive in its scope and depth. It is intended to develop specialist aircraft design engineers and offers a detailed understanding of the design process commonly followed in the development of aircraft.

Design modules are designed by the AASSC the designated council for Aerospace.

This module provides a technical overview of an aircraft’s systems and sub-systems and covers the theory of flight and principles of flight mechanics. Beginning with the early aircraft, the module also covers the evolution of design to today’s iconic commercial and military jets.

Aircraft Design

In this module a conceptual understanding of the design process commonly followed by engineers in the development of aircraft will be provided and students will be lead through the process step-by-step to build a thorough understanding of the design lifecycle. This case study-based module will provide a quantitative and qualitative approach to aircraft design from the determination of its configuration based on user specifications to parametric optimization. Other topics in this module include:

  • Flight regime and powerplant considerations
  • Fuselage layout
  • Configuration of the wing
  • Analysis of concept design

Key tools used:

  • Dassault Systemes’ CATIA v5
  • ANSYS Mechanical Workbench
  • MathWorks’ MATLAB and SIMULINK

Structural Design and Analysis

Practical and tool-based, this module will dive deep into principles of fuselage structural design and will involve hands-on experience with industry-standard 3D parts and components modeling tools. Building on design, students will be taught approaches to applied analysis and testing of structural components and assemblies with the help of tools commonly used in industry. Other topics in this module include:

  • Advanced Solid Mechanics
  • Basic Analysis of Joints
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Composite Mechanics and Manufacturing
  • Aircraft Safety and Design for Manufacture

Note: At the end of this module candidates will be certified to be qualified for the following job roles as per Aerospace & Aviation Sector Skill Council:

Aircraft Systems

Structures give an aircraft flight but systems give it purpose. This module provides a comprehensive description of avionics and aircraft systems, which are fundamental to the life of civil and military aircraft. The industry standard processes for design of avionics hardware using DO 254, software using DO 178C and system qualification using DO 160G form the foundations of this module. Other topics in this module include:

  • System Design Lifecycle
  • Avionics Software Testing Process
  • Electrical System Design and Analysis
  • Electronic Engineering Drawing Technique
  • Systems Manufacturing Processes
